    What is a power transformer?

    Date:2018-4-19 17:46

    • Power transformers are generally used in transmission network for stepping up or down the voltage level. It operates mainly during high or peak loads and has maximum efficiency at or near full load. Distribution Transformers steps down the voltage for distribution purpose to domestic or commercial users. It has good voltage regulation and operates 24 hrs a day with maximum efficiency at 50% of full load.

    • Power Transformer is generally rated at Higher MVA(>200MVA)and it is used in step up and step down the application in Transmission, whereas distribution transformer used in distribution.

    • Bigger in size.

    • the main difference between power and distribution transformer is distribution transformer is designed for maximum efficiency at 60% to 70% load as normally doesn’t operate at full load all the time. Its load depends on distribution demand. Whereas power transformer is designed for maximum efficiency at 100% load as it always runs at 100% load being near to generating station.
