Why are water storage facilities needed for hydropower plants?

    Date:2018-5-4 11:52

Many dams are built to moderate the flow of rivers. They help avoid or reduce flooding of areas downstream. As such, the primary purpose of the dam is to retain the water and release it over a longer period of time. The secondary purpose is to generate electricity.

Having a dam behind the water turbines allows them to produce the electricity more in line with the demand for electricity. A power dam can react very quickly to changes in demand for electricity by simply opening and closing the sluiceways that bring the water into the turbine. This, along with the free, non-polluting fuel source, makes hydroelectricity beneficial to the grid and better for the environment than burning fossil fuels.
